Our courses are primarily taught in .22 calibre for rifle and any calibre for pistol. There are compelling and specific reasons for focusing our rifle training on the .22.

.22 is the most affordable ammunition available for a rifle.

Civilians rarely have the opportunity to have a police department or the federal government pay for training and/or ammunition. A day on the range participating in combat rifle training can easily expend 1000 rounds of ammunition. In the popular .223 calibre this would cost roughly $550 CAD. Alternatively, 1000 rounds of .22 would cost around $50 CAD. This allows trainees to refine their skills the only way possible, hours on the range and trigger time under supervision of an instructor.

In Canada, the only firearm with no limit on magazine capacity is one chambered in .22.

This rule applies to all rim fired ammunition. Many courses are available to be taught in .223 centered on the AR 15. In the civilian world, all participants would be limited to 5 round magazines and 10 round magazines if they are stamped for the LAR 15. This is impractical and problematic for this type of training. Civil Advantage will also offer courses based on the AR 15 weapon system but they will focus on finer skills training that may not require as many rounds fired.

Rifles chambered in .22 can be safely fired at steel targets at close range.

Steel targets offer instant shooter feedback and most shooters agree are far more enjoyable than shooting paper targets. The .22 cartridge offers a fast moving bullet with manageable audible output. This creates an opportunity to hear the sound of a target being struck and the instant gratification of a shot well placed.

Rifles chambered in .22 can be modified to improve ergonomics.

Many modifications are available for these rifles that can mimic the AR platform. This allows skills developed in .22 to be easily transferred to the AR 15 weapon system.

2011 Fall Training Weekend

2011 Fall Weekend Training Event: Combat Pistol in Dynamic Environments, High Risk Room Entry with Simunition(R)

The Fall 2011 Weekend Training event was as great as promised. We had a fantastic opportunity to train with our friends in 3 different law enforcement agencies, private military contracting and CF. Both days were a great success despite the freezing temperatures on Saturday.

Two representatives from Abbotsford Fish & Game Club's ATS (Abbotsford Tactical Shooters) were present and gave our weekend rave reviews. See a letter from the Director, Richard Simpson here.

Thanks to all who participated!!!

Ammo Buyers Group & New Courses Announced
Civil Advantage Ammo Group (CAAG), New Course Opportunities

Civil Advantage Ammo Group (CAAG)

This is a non-profit group to coordinate bulk ammo purchases for interested shooters. We will be the coordinator or other members will as the group grows.

How it works: We have set up a simple forum to communicate and notify all members of new purchasing opportunites. When a new bulk purchasing opportunity is posted a message will go out to all members. Info about the opportunity will be posted in the forum and chime in if you are interested. We will form an order and place it at one time.

Typically there will be a deadline to form the purchase or a time window to use our groups name to get the agreed pricing. We will all purchase directly from the seller as Civil Advantage is not an equipment supplier nor will we be in the foreseeable future. This is a group by shooters and for shooters. If you can find a connection for cheap ammo, feel free to bring it to the group by messaging an admin.

Join the forum and bring your friends. the more people we have the better deals we can get. Join the group by registering here... Click here to register

CFSC & New beginner AR15 and Semi Auto Pistol Courses

We have added new CFSC dates to our schedule. We are now providing instruction in Aldergrove close to the freeway to make it easier for our customers outside of the Fraser Valley to join in.

We have also added an exciting new opportunity for our students that are interested in combat style shooting or a unique educational experience. Introduction to Combat Firearms for AR15 or Semi Auto Pistol is a way for beginners or anyone else that wants to expand their skills to get a solid foundation in this type of shooting. There are no expert operators here, no SWAT or Special Forces members, just you (or you and your friends) learning the basics and feeling free to ask questions or work on basic skills. We will walk you through the fundamentals including instruction in combat stress management. Written course materials will be provided for you to keep including a drill guide to help you practice effectively when you're at the range. This course makes a great gift for the conventional shooter as well. See the description in "Courses & Dates" or call for more information.

Canadian Firearm Safety Course Reviews …
What our students had to say...

What determines if a Canadian Firearms Safety Course is of a high quality or not?

Firstly, the instructor needs to have not only experience in a variety of firearms but also in the handling of these firearms in different sports. Secondly, the instructor needs to be a competent teacher and communicator as well as genuinely care whether the students leave with the training they expected. It is very important that he or she be patient and provide a comfortable and professional environment to cover this critical material. And lastly, the equipment, meaning the firearms must be the type and quality the student will encounter in the real world. The firearms used in the CFSC must not be poorly maintained.

All of these qualities are fulfilled at Civil Advantage because we care about the students we certify and their contribution to our society and our firearms community.

Some Kind Words From Our Students

Hi Rod,
I've passed your card along to a lot of people so hopefully you'll be getting a few more phone calls from members! Great course, great instruction. It really rounded out my knowledge concerning the types of civilian firearms I encounter on the job.

RCMP Member, Jan 2011

Hi Rod,
We wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed the CFSC course we took with you. We found you to be experienced, and presented the material in an easy to understand format, truly caring about our safety and the safety of others when handling any firearm. Although safety was your first objective, you made the course enjoyable and had a wealth of information to share. My husband and I would recommend this or other training from Civil Advantage to anyone either a beginner or advanced.

Hi Rod,
I wanted to comment on your classroom, and range training. Simply put, there should be more teachers like you out there. You made the classroom a very relaxed environment, all the while keeping the most important aspects of the course, safety and common sense at the forefront. I truly appreciate your calm direct approach. It was most beneficial to me as demonstrated at the range. One mistake could hurt someone, and that is the most concerning scenario for me. I hope that with more practice, the carry and concerns of the range will be as safe and enjoyable as possible. I look forward to getting my PAL and ATT so I can join the club at Abbotsford. I’ve found a passion in target shooting and now am looking forward to developing my skills. Thank You!!

Hi Rod,
I wanted to thank you for putting on such an awesome course. I found it really professional and your explanations were concise and well done. I will definitely be recommending you to friends! I was always some what nervous around firearms and now I feel that in almost any situation I can pick up a gun make it safe and use them safely.
